Mud Dye
Mud dyeing is a traditional craft of Amami Oshima.
After pre-dyeing with a mordant made by boiling “Fukugi” which grows wild in Amami,
it is dyed with mud from the muddy fields.
The mud is iron-rich mud field mud from the ancient stratum of 1.5 million years ago on Amami-Oshima.
First dyed with “Fukugi” mordant, dyed with mud in a mud field, and then rinsed in the river to remove the mud,
The process is repeated: dyeing in “Fukugi”, mud-dyeing in the mud field, and rinsing in the river.
Mud dyeing is a precious dyeing process that requires the blessings of nature,
techniques cultivated over many years, and time.
